چکیده

We report our recent successful experiences related to the development of a transcontinental course in silicon photonics offered by the University of British Columbia in collaboration with CMC Microsystems. The course is offered to students from across Canada and has attracted participants from nearly every Canadian university with an advanced photonics research program. The focus of the course is the rapidly developing field of silicon photonics. Its aim is to provide the students with a breadth of competencies in designing optical circuits and systems using a silicon-on-insulator platform. The students taking the course gain familiarity in design, fabrication, and testing in an area of photonics that is destined to play an increasingly important, and in the long run ubiquitous, role in optical circuitry, impacting on areas such as optical interconnects, communications systems, and sensor systems. The course is structured using a blended-learning pedagogical approach consisting of an on-site workshop followed by designbased e-learning. The students’ designs are fabricated using IMEC’s passive photonic cSOI process, which is accessed through the European silicon photonics prototyping service ePIXfab. Student projects to date have included the design of integratedoptical circuits using combinations of ring resonators, waveguides, couplers, and photonic crystals for applications such as filters for WDM optical interconnects, demodulators for phase modulated signals, and lab-on-chip sensors.

Guest Editors’ Introduction: Silicon Nanophotonics for Future Multicore Architectures

h IT IS OUR pleasure to introduce this Special Issue on Silicon Nanophotonics for Future Multicore Architectures. The need for high-performance and energy-efficient communication between processing cores has never been more critical. The increase in core counts in emerging chip multiprocessors (CMPs) has put more pressure on the communication fabric to support many more streams of high bandwidt...

Visible and 1.54 μm Emission From Amorphous Silicon Nitride Films by Reactive Cosputtering

In this paper, we present our main results on the structural and optical properties of light-emitting amorphous silicon nitride (SiNx) films fabricated by reactive magnetron cosputtering. In particular, we discuss the origin of the visible emission in amorphous silicon nitride films and investigate the optical emission properties of Erbium-doped amorphous silicon nitride (Er:SiNx). The mechanis...

Fabrication of high-resolution nanostructures of complex geometry by the single-spot nanolithography method

The paper presents a method for the high-resolution production of polymer nanopatterns with controllable geometrical parameters by means of a single-spot electron-beam lithography technique. The essence of the method entails the overexposure of a positive-tone resist, spin-coated onto a substrate where nanoscale spots are exposed to an electron beam with a dose greater than 0.1 pC per dot. A si...

Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuit (3D IC) Key Technology: Through-Silicon Via (TSV)

3D integration with through-silicon via (TSV) is a promising candidate to perform system-level integration with smaller package size, higher interconnection density, and better performance. TSV fabrication is the key technology to permit communications between various strata of the 3D integration system. TSV fabrication steps, such as etching, isolation, metallization processes, and related fai...

Fabrication of Fluorescent Nanoprobes and Their Applications in Nanophotonics

In recent years, nanoprobe-based devices have attracted significant attention and found a wide range of applications, including nanostructure imaging, single molecular detection, and physical, chemical, and biological sensing applications. However, since the scale of nanodevices is substantially less than the optical diffraction limit, their fabrication remains a difficult challenge. Despite si...
